Capacity Development

While solutions to climate change will ultimately come from us (the society), we first need to understand the problem. What is climate change? What is sustainability, and why are they important? What is the difference between mitigation and adaptation? What progress is being made globally? What is working and what is not? What role does Africa play, and how can we participate in global conversations to influence the narrative?

Each one of us can contribute to solving these problems, even if we don’t realize it yet. Whether you are a TikToker, an employee of a financial institution, an advocate of the high court, a teacher, a boda-boda rider, a chef, a student, a content creator, a techie, or a farmer, whatever role you play in society, there is a part for everyone to play.

At fhionQ, we strengthen the climate and sustainability capabilities of learning institutions (across primary and secondary schools, technical institutions, and universities), organisations, and the general public to effectively tackle climate and sustainability challenges. For learning institutions, we offer climate curriculum development, working with them to design and embed climate change, sustainability, and ESG content into their existing programs, equipping students with the climate literacy they need well before they enter the job market.

Through the fhionQ Academy, we offer live online courses for anyone, anywhere in the world, who wants to understand climate change, sustainability and ESG. No prior background is needed. Our first two courses, Climate Change Literacy and Sustainability & ESG Literacy, run for 15 weeks each and take participants from the basics of climate science to more complex topics such as carbon markets, climate risk and sustainable finance. Participants can take either course on its own, or both as a pathway. Our first cohort starts in November 2026.

Our training modules span a wide range of topics, including:

  • Introduction to Climate Science
  • Impacts of Climate Change
  • Sources of Energy
  • The Energy Transition
  • Responding to Climate Change
    (climate mitigation & climate adaptation)
  • Climate Policy & Global Frameworks
  • Policy Instruments for Climate Action
  • Fundamentals of Sustainability & ESG
  • Sustainability Regulations and Reporting
  • Circular Economy & Resource Efficiency
  • Carbon Accounting
  • Carbon Markets
  • Climate Risk Modeling
  • Climate Scenarios (RCPs, SSPs and NGFS)
  • Climate Finance

We have developed a set of learning tools to reinforce these concepts through applied, hands-on learning. Our first tool is Ternan, a climate risk game where participants work through real-world business scenarios shaped by a climate-related event. Working in groups, they practice identifying the type and source of the risk, understanding how it affects the business, and tracing it through to its financial implications. Our second tool is Dawson, a climate opportunities game where participants work through scenarios set in Velisa, a virtual country shaped by a climate event, policy shift, or market change. Working in groups, they brainstorm the opportunities each scenario could create, then compare their ideas against a curated list of real possibilities. Our third tool is Harcourt, a catastrophe framework game that shows participants how risk comes from hazard, exposure, and vulnerability together, so the same event can be a catastrophe for one business and harmless to another. Our fourth tool is Liffey, an NGFS climate scenarios game where participants read short news reports from the future, set in real places across Africa. Working in groups, they work out which of the seven NGFS scenarios each report belongs to, and learn to tell apart futures that look alike.
